17th Annual Jeff Nelson Memorial Golf Tournament

The South Boston Jaycees are making preparations for the 17th Annual Jeff Nelson Memorial Golf Tournament to be held at Greens Folley Golf Course on Friday May 6th. This tournament is the premier charity scramble in Halifax County and serves as a kickoff to the golf tournament season at both Greens Folley and Halifax Country Club.

As in most charity tournaments, the format is a 4 person captain’s choice with prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in 4 flights. The 2 lowest handicap players on the team determine flights. The Jeff Nelson Memorial is noted as having the best prizes both for the winners and closest to the pins on the par 3’s. A golf cart sponsored by Bridgeview Cart and Trailer Sales and a car sponsored by Puckett Automotive will be given away to any player who makes a hole in 1 on holes 9 or 12.

The Jaycees will tell you that the most important aspect of the tournament is the local charities that they have been able to support over the years through the proceeds of this event. None of which would be possible without the support of all of the hole sponsors, team sponsors, lunch sponsor and the long time primary sponsor, Danville Distributing.

The beneficiary of this year’s tournament is the Halifax County Chapter of the American Red Cross. The Red Cross is the first to respond with aid in the event of any major catastrophe such as a hurricane or tornado. They also play a critical role in assisting local people who have been displaced from their homes by fire. In addition to these very important functions, they are also responsible for life saving CPR training in the area.

The tournament is held in memory of Jeff Nelson.
