The Mall and the Lake Country SPCA are joining forces and conducting a pet food drive and collect over 1000 pounds of food for the LCSPCA shelter.

  For the entire month of February, each donor of a 5-pound bag of pet food will receive a �free� hole punch on their �Smart Shopper�s Card�there are no limits to the number of punches you may receive! Don�t have a Virginia Avenue Mall Smart Shopper�s card yet? Join the other 900+ people have them and watch your savings add up�the card is free!

  Let�s help the SPCA and the Mall with this pet food drive�the SPCA uses 60-70 pounds per day; kitten and puppy food is especially needed, in addition to regular pet food.

  Vickie Fuquay has been housing bluebirds since 1990. She is the bluebird coordinator for Pittsylvania-Halifax Counties. She is on the board of the Virginia Bluebird Society, and a member of the Speakers Bureau of the North American Bluebird Society.

The Danville Elks Lodge #227 will host a pancake breakfast fund raiser for the benefit of the George Washington High School Baseball Booster Club on Saturday February 12, 2011. The menu will include pancakes hot off the griddle, savory sausage, juice, and coffee.

230th Anniversary Commemoration of The Crossing of the Dan -

Berryman Green Chapter of the Virginia DAR, Dan River Chapter of the Virginia Society, SAR, Halifax County Historical Society, and Halifax County Middle School are co-hosting the 230th Anniversary Commemoration of the Crossing of the Dan (River) in Virginia during the American Revolution and invite you to attend and participate. Free public events are planned for Thursday night, February 17th and Saturday morning, February 19th, 2011, at The Prizery, the community and arts center, located at 700 Bruce Street, South Boston, Virginia.

Clarksville Community Center, 6-9 pm. Proceeds will benefit cancer patients in Mecklenburg County. Auction items from businesses and individuals are requested. A Mardi Gras party is going to be held at the Convergence Art Guild gallery on March 5 at 7 pm. Tickets are $10 (more at the door). Beer and wine will be available at our bar. Music will be by Adrian Duke and his band. A stage designer who works with the Halifax Little Theatre is handling the decorations. The Molasses Grill and several guild members will be providing the Cajun-themed food. On the menu will be jambalaya, red beans & rice, muffaletta sandwiches and other Cajun delights. Costumes and masks are being encouraged (there will be a mask-making workshop the previous weekend.) Local businesses are donating prizes, which are being displayed in the gallery windows. These will be presented throughout the evening. A king and queen will be crowned and nomination boxes will be available at locations all around town.

Celebrate the farming heritage of our community at this event that will give you a taste of life as it was lived years ago.
