We've been listening

October may be our best issue yet.

We keep asking, "What can we do to improve Discover Southside?"

And you, our readers have been telling us.

You have told us you love what you see, but you want to see more of it. More of everything. More pictures, more articles, and more local event coverage.

   We've been listening.

This month we have more of everything. Just like you asked for. In addition to more pictures and articles, we even have a special section to celebrate October as "Virginia Wine Month".

This month also begins a special series of articles highlighting the revitalization of the downtown areas of several Southside communities. For October we are featuring Downtown Danville. And it is loaded with pictures.

   We've been listening.

If you haven't visited Danville for a while, see "Danville's Downtown Renaissance" and you may decide to make a trip to check out some of the merchants or the sights. Maybe even take in a concert. Bring your walking shoes or bicycle and spend some time on the River Walk or at one of the many parks or picnic areas.

   Writers Wanted

To bring you more of the best, we need to expand our coverage. We are actively looking for writers to contribute stories about art, life and leisure in or near Southside. Have you got the gift of the pen? Would you like your work seen by people in Southside? Even if you have never written for a magazine or been published before, here is your chance. Do you have a story idea? Drop us a line. We want to hear from you. Although we can't promise to publish every one, we will review them all and many will appear in Discover Southside.

You may have noticed the column "Born & Bred" is by a different writer each month. "Born & Bred" is a reader supplied column sent in by you, your family, friends or neighbors, and we are really enjoying the stories If you have a true (even if slightly embellished) story about life in Southside Virginia, we want to hear from you.

Send your story, or story idea, in plain text to

   editor@discoversouthside.com

Many of you have asked us about submitting general poetry. You said you wanted to see your work published here. At first we thought we would limit it to descriptive poetry focusing on life in Southside, but we have received so many inquiries about general poetry we have opened the submission guidelines to accept all types for consideration.

   We've been listening.

In the next couple months we will have a poetry special edition where we will publish the best our readers have to offer. How about yours?

If you have prose or poetry you would like to see printed,
send it in plain text to

   editor@discoversouthside.com

Thank you for all your suggestions. We hope to continue to improve Discover Southside every month. You told us what you wanted and we've been listening.

We hope you enjoy the October issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together.
